Hebrews 1: Part 2

I did not do a poll for this weeks devotional. The reason for this is that I was personally very encouraged with what I wrote last week for Hebrews. I recall I said last week I could very well do a 5 point series on the first 4 verses of Hebrews. That is why I took the liberty of writing again on Hebrews 1. I hope this encourages you!

Now, last week I sort of skipped over Hebrews 1:2 so I wanted to start there this week. At this point, I don't know how this article is going to go. I am simply writing as I feel inspired. So let's start.

Hebrews 1:2 "but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world."

This verse alone is packed with a lot of theology in it and we should aim to get it right what the author is trying to convey here.

Noteworthy is that it says, "In these last days." That begs the question, what "last days" is he talking about. The answer is that the "Last Days" are the days "Spoken to us by his Son." The Author of Hebrews wants to get this across that "In the last days is when the Son speaks to us," more or less. So the categorization of the "Last Days" is that the "Son is speaking to us."

Now, one might ponder what it means for the Son to speak to us. I personally am of the opinion that it has a lot to do with the Spirit of the Son that speaks to us through the Word, that is, the Holy Scriptures, the Bible. Note worthy here is if something is spoken with authority it must line up with what the Son says. What this means is that the Son speaking is the last revelation to us before the Son comes back for His bride.

By extension, we can say the Quran does not speak by the Son since the Quran conflicts with the Bible, so the Quran is not a valid revelation to man by God.

There's also this other really interesting thing which states, "Whom he appointed the heir of all things." This is a call back to Christ being the seed of Abraham. There are some parallels here between Christ being the seed of Abraham and we being "fellow heirs" with Christ. Plenty of passages in the Bible to back this up but here are a few.

Rom. 8:17 "and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him."

And,

Galatians 3:29 "And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise."

And,

Ephesians 3:6 "This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel."

And,

Titus 3:7 "so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life."

So the take away from the phrase "Heir of all things" is that through Christ's resurrection, we become heirs as Paul states,

1 Corinthians 15:12 "Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain... 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins."

And,

Ephesians 1:13 "In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory."

Finally, let's cover the last part of the verse which states, "Through whom also he created the world."

The logical deduction is that through the speaking of the Son, by him being the heir of all things, the world was created. And that's a great segue to something else in Hebrews. I talk of the faith chapter which states clearly,

Hebrews 11:3 "By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible."

It is by faith in the spoken word of the Son that we understand that the universe was created by things that are not visible. This is interesting as many naturalists try and squeeze in an understanding of the creation of the universe by things that are not visible. So atheists are actually affirming Hebrews 1:3 when they say things like, "Gravity is the cause of the big bang." I say this because gravity is not a visible thing. Yet they try and argue that gravity is what caused the big bang. It seems an awful lot like their understanding of gravity can be easily attributed to YHWH in the creation of the universe since they don't actually know for sure whether it was gravity or simply some other thing that is not visible. Naturalists try and get away from the idea that the universe was created by God only to affirm that the universe was created by things that are not visible, which, to me, just implies that they are saying God created the universe.

So we see all things are under Christ's authority by the Word of His power (Hebrews 1:3) and that we are fellow heirs with Christ, the Son, and upon Christ's return we too will inherit all things under the headship of Christ (Eph. 4:13).

Blessings. Until next time.
